Looking for holy grail hair advice? I probably don't have it. Also my hair is most likely below average. But I'm trying to take better care of it, and this is an easy way to be a basic white girl and go all "New Year, New Me" without having to go to the gym or stop watching reality tv.

1. Wash Your Hair a Max of 2-3 Times a Week.

Your hair's natural oils are actually needed to condition and protect it, and shampooing daily strips the oils away. Your hair in turn gets more dried out. The long term effect is actually over-production of oils that continues to increase your need to shampoo. Keep it healthy by refraining from overwashing, and find yourself a quality dry shampoo with a clean smell, nothing over-fragranced. It can even add great texture and volume if you don't brush it out all the way.

2. Use Shampoo On the Scalp Only - Not the Ends

When you rinse your hair the shampoo will run down through the ends, but you don't want to scrub them because the product and the scrubbing are damaging to your more fragile locks.

3. Avoid Hot Water

Rinse with warm or cold water to clean out product. Hot water dries out hair and results in damaging tangles.

4. Towel-Dry Your Hair Before Applying Conditioner

Wet hair can't absorb product and you won't get the benefits that conditioning offers. Dry off your hair if you can to pull out excess water, or at least wring out the extra water if you're short on time.

5. Deep Condition

Get a good conditioner and glide it through your hair. Then apply heat by either leaving it in while you shave/wash your body/wash your face and letting the steam do the job, or wrapping it in a shower cap and blow drying the cap. This does wonders for strengthening the hair proteins and making hair silkier, shinier, and softer.

6. Brush Your Hair Twice a Day, From the Bottom Up

Brush once in the morning and once before going to bed, for about one minute each time. Don't tear through it, be gentle. Brushing from the roots causes damage, so start at the ends.

7. Don't Brush - Use a Wide-Tooth Comb

Wet Hair is Weak, Fragile, and Easily Broken. Use a comb and not a brush.

8. Cut Back on Heat-Styling

Don't use tools every day. Try second-day curls in a high-ponytail, waves from overnight braids, and bringing back a cute top-knot bun.

9. Careful With the Heat

Wait 15 minutes after showering and drying your hair before blow drying to cut back on time that it's under the heat. Don't hold blow dryers too close to your head - stay about 3 inches away. Use low heat settings. If you're impatient with it taking longer than a high heat, just think of your hair looking shiny as ever.

10. No Towel Turbans

Don't wrap up your hair in a "turban". Don't rub out the water with your towel vigorously either. Use your towel to squeeze out water and pat your head dry. Your healthy hair will thank you!
